BA splis with Natchez Trinity

The Brookhaven Academy Cougars split a doubleheader with theNatchez Trinity Saints in non-district action Saturday afternoon atCougar Field.

The Cougars scored eight runs in the fourth inning of the openerto down the Saints 15-5. Natchez Trinity took the nightcap with 10total runs in the fourth and fifth innings to edge the Cougars11-10 in a comeback.

The Cougars jumped out to a 4-2 lead after two innings, andcoasted from there to the 15-5 win over the Saints.

Ben Davis and Adam Smith had RBI doubles in the first inning asthe Cougars tied the Saints 2-2. Trinity scored its two runs onfour Cougar errors.

Brookhaven Academy took the lead in the second inning on an RBIdouble by Davis and an RBI groundout by Kelly Allred.

Trinity tied it in the top of the fourth on an error and an RBIsingle by Chase Brown. After that it was all Cougars as they scoredeight runs in their half of the fourth, thanks to three hitbatsmen, RBI doubles by Smith and Davis and RBI singles by LaneMoreton and Jeffrey Waycaster.

“It took us a while to get started in the first game,” saidCougar head coach Ron Rushing, “but we put together enough hits todo some damage.”

The Cougars added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth onan error, an RBI single by Cole Hodges and a bases loaded walk toBrian Dunbar.

Chad Lagrone went the distance in the five inning affair to evenhis record at 1-1. He allowed five runs on seven hits, struck outfour and walked two. Chase Brown suffered the loss for theSaints.

Natchez Trinity 11, Brookhaven 10

The Cougars opened up an 8-1 lead after three, only tofall apart in the last two innings of the loss.

“For a team who hasn’t been to the playoffs in some 10years, you’d think our squad would be more excited,” said Rushingafter the defeat. “That just wasn’t the case in the second game. Wewere flat when we got the lead, and I’m very disappointed in ourperformance. We had won 8 of our last 10 games before this. We werevery inconsistent.”

Brookhaven Academy took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of thefirst when Smith plated Davis, who had reached on adouble.

The Saints tied it at 1-1 in the top of the third whenWes Middleton doubled in Cole Brown.

The Cougars then pushed across seven runs in the bottomof the third. The big blows included RBI doubles by Moreton andChase Rainer and and RBI single by Brandon Achord.

The Saints came back with six runs in the top of thefourth inning. Chase Brown, Chad Ridley and Cole Brown all had RBIsingles.

The Cougars made it 9-7 in the bottom of the fourth onCole Hodges’ RBI single.

Rushing then brought in Smith in the top of the fifth,but the Saints lit him up for four runs on RBI singles by AndyMoon, Greg Ketchings and Wes Watts.

“Our pitching was not up to par in the second game,”said Rushing. “We started Klien (Harbour) and followed up with Cole(Smith). Then we brought in Adam (Smith) when we got the lead, butwe just couldn’t hold it.”

Brookhaven Academy cut the lead to 11-10 in the bottomof the fifth when Allred doubled in Smith who also doubled. ButElliot Meng came in and struck out Rainer and Chase Magee to endthe game.

Smith had four hits, three RBIs and three doubles topace the Cougars (11-8). Moreton had two hits for BA.

Watts got the win for the Saints while Smith (4-3)suffered the loss.

The Cougars will host district rival Columbia Academywith the JV game at 5 p.m. and varsity action set for 7p.m.
