Co-Lin gains split with Jones Co.

WESSON-Good Friday turned out to be a half successful for theCo-Lin baseball team as the Wolves and Jones County battled in aSouth Division doubleheader at Sullivan Field.
The Wolfpack edged the Bobcats 2-1 in Game 1, but Jones Countygained a split with a resounding 13-7 win in the finale.
With the 2-game split, Co-Lin moved to 24-14 overall and 11-7 inSouth Division. Jones County stands at 22-17 and 11-7 in thedivision. They are tied for second place, behind first place leaderGulf Coast in the red-hot race for the state tournament.
Co-Lin travels to East Central on Tuesday. The South Divisiondoubleheader begins at 2 p.m.

This was a defensive struggle, as both teams executedsuperior plays throughout the 7-inning affair.
The Wolves, coached by Keith Case, would strike in thebottom of the fourth. Leftfielder Brandon Atkins singled. BrittHederman reached as he was hit by a pitch. Brandon Hollemansingled, but an error bythe Bobcat centerfielder allowed Atkins toscore and Co-Lin had taken a1-0 lead.
Jones County would tie the game at 1-1 in the top of theseventh. Jason Rowland singled. Josh Sullivan reached on afielder’s choice, advancing Rowland to second. Clint Harris’infield single loaded the bases. Rowland later scored on a wildpitch.
In the bottom of the inning, Wolfpack catcher David Graydoubled. Arlandus Brown and Kyle Beall were walked to load thebases. On a 3-1 pitch from Bobcat relief pitcher Chad Christian,Atkins walked to score Atkins.
“We played well defensively,” said Case. “We arestarting to hit the ball.”
Doug Atkins (3-4) picked up the win for Wolfpack starterJacob Blakeney. Atkins threw 2/3 innings, striking out 2; allowingno runs, hits or walks.
Matt McAlphin (5-5) suffered the loss for JonesCounty.
Jones Co. 13, Co-Lin 7
Two crucial innings seemed to be the Wolves’ downfall,as Jones County salvaged a split of the doubleheader.
Co-Lin appeared to be well on its way to a sweep in thefirst. Beall singled and stole second. Two batters later, Hedermansingled to score Beall for the early 1-0 lead.
Jones County batted around in the second. Sullivan,Harris, Kyle Ripkins and Nic Wooten crossed home plate to give theBobcats a 4-1 advantage.
The Wolves would tie the game at 4-4 in their half ofthe inning. Matt Lea walked. Brett Duncan singled. Jason Milessingled to load the bases. Gray’s sac fly scored Lea. Brown reachedon a fielder’s choice to score Duncan. Brown stole second and movedto third on an error. Beall’s single scored Brown.
The Bobcats sent 12 batters to the plate in the third.Sullivan, Ripkins, Wooten, Scott Ward, Chris Bush, McAlphin andRowland scored. McAlphin’s 2-run homer scored Bush.
“We couldn’t stop the big innings,” said Case. “Wedidn’t do the things we needed to do to win.” Case was referring tothe second and third innings as Jones County totaled 11runs.
Jones Co. added 2 runs in the top of the fifth to take a13-4 lead.
The Wolves closed the gap to 13-6 in the bottom of theinning. Hederman singled. Holleman singled and moved to second onthe throw-in. Hederman scored from third on a wild pitch. SethLofton singled to scored Holleman.
Co-Lin closed out the scoring in the sixth, asdesignated hitter Jason Miles smashed a long solo homer over centerfield.
Justin Hennington, a Greene County product, picked upthe win for the Bobcats. He threw a complete game (7 innings),allowing 7 earned runs on 12 hits. He walked 2 and fanned4.
Josh Garrett suffered the loss for the Wolves. Hepitched 2.1 innings, allowing 7 earned runs on 6 hits with 3 walksand 2 strikeouts.
Co-Lin was paced by Miles who was 2-for-4 with a singleand home run. Hederman went 3-for-4 with 3 singles. Beall had 2singles.
