Flag change rejected in area counties

Election results from area counties were much as the same andLincoln County and the rest of the state, with strong voter turnoutand support for retaining the current state banner, area electionofficials said.
“We had a good turnout,” said Copiah County Circuit Clerk EdnaStevens, whose county saw about a 50 percent voter turnout.
The Copiah County margin of victory for the old flag was theclosest among area counties. There, 5,100 people voted for thecurrent flag while 3,567 supported adopting a proposed newflag.
In Lawrence County, a little over 50 percent of the county’svoters showed up and supported the old flag by about a 2.5-1margin. Support for the current flag totaled 3,913 and 1,471 peoplevoted for the new flag.
With 55 percent turnout, Franklin County officials reported thehighest percentage of voter participation. The vote was heavily infavor of the current flag, with 2,490 supporting it and 978 wantingthe new banner.
