Brookhaven Academy slips past Porter’s Chapel

VICKSBURG – The Brookhaven Academy Cougars held off Porter’sChapel for a 4-3 non-division win Friday night in the final game ofthe regular season.

Brookhaven Academy improves to 14-10 with the win while Porter’sChapel falls to 17-10.

In the top of the seventh inning, Brookhaven Academy andPorter’s Chapel were tied at 2-all. The Cougars scored two runs togo ahead 4-2. Brandon Achord walked and Layne Moreton bunted. ThePorter’s Chapel pitcher threw the ball into right field and Achordscored the go-ahead run for a 3-2 lead. Jeffrey Waycaster’s suicidebunt was successful an scored Moreton from third base for the 4-2lead.

Porter’s Chapel came back with a home run in the bottom of theseventh but remained short of the tie.

“We played a good defensive game,” said Brookhaven Academy coachRon Rushing.

Waycaster led the Cougars with another single followed by BenDavis who also singled.

Chad Lagrone got the win in relief of starter Adam Smith.Lagrone (2-1) worked the fourth, fifth and sixth innings with 2runs allowed on 7 hits, 3 strikeouts and 1 walk.

Smith pitched the first 3 innings. He allowed 1 run on 2 hits,struck out 1 and walked 3. Ben Sandifer finished the seventh with 1strikeout and 2 deliberate walks to gain a save.

Brookhaven Academy visits Canton Academy Tuesday night for thefirst game of a best-of-three series in the Academy AA stateplayoffs. Canton visits Brookhaven Thursday for the second game at4:30, followed immediately by a third game if necessary.
