Diamond Wolves bow to Itawamba, Gulf Coast

FULTON – Greg Davidson provided a 2-run double in the bottom ofthe 10th inning and lifted the Itawamba Community College Indiansto a 6-5 victory over the Co-Lin Wolves in the opening round of theMACJC State Tournament.

The Wolves, coached by Keith Case, have a 28-23 record. Theywill play in the Region 23 Tournament May 10-13, at Senatobia.

Itawamba (37-12) led 5-1 entering the eighth inning. BrittHederman hit a 2-run double for the Wolves and Kyle Beall providedan RBI single in the ninth to tie the the game.

In Saturday’s second round elimination game, the South ChampGulf Coast Bulldogs (27-22) stopped Co-Lin 7-1, eliminating theWolves who came into the game as the defending NJCAA Region 23Champion and Central District Super Regional Champion.

Itawamba 6, Co-Lin 5

In Friday’s loss, Co-Lin scored three runs in the top of theeighth and one in the ninth to tie the game at 5-all.

Scott Ellison was the winning pitcher in relief the final twoinnings with 1 strikeout and 3 hits allowed. Starter Den Lindsayworked the first 7 1/3 innings followed by Clint VanAsselberg in2/3 innings action.

Absorbing the loss was Jacob Blakeney in the final 1 2/3innings. Josh Garrett started and went the first five innings,followed by Doug Atkins the next 2 1/3 innings.

Dusty Raby rippled a three-run homer and added two more hits forItawamba. Gabriel Figuerea, Jonathan Van Emery and Greg Danielscollected two hits apiece.

For Co-Lin, Kyle Beall and David Gray led with three hitsapiece. Brandon Atkins and Brett Hederman doubled and singledapiece.

Gulf Coast 7, Co-Lin 1

The Wolves trailed the Bulldogs by just two runs, 3-1,after three innings. Gulf Coast collected two runs over the nexttwo innings and added one in the top of the ninth to eliminateCo-Lin.

Winning pitcher Brodie Erwin (4-1) went the distancewith three hits allowed.

Mike Thrasher powered the Bulldogs with a two-run homer.Fred Lewis, Matt Foreman and Matt Anders had two hitsapiece.

For the 3-hit Wolves, Brandon Atkins, Hederman andArlandus Brown singled. Brown’s single scored Brandon Holleman forCo-Lin’s only run in the third inning.
