Brookhaven teams win in subdistrict

Tyler Cunningham pitched five innings of no-hit baseball inleading the Brookhaven National League All-Stars to a 6-2 Mondaynight victory over Hazlehurst in the Dixie Youth Major League NorthSubdistrict Six tournament at Keystone Park. Cunningham struck out10 batters and walked 8 in the battle of previously unbeatenteams.

In the other game last night, Brookhaven’s American LeagueAll-Stars rebounded to whip Crystal Springs 10-2 in an eliminationgame. The Americans drew a bye and advance to Wednesday night,awaiting the winner of tonight’s 7 o’clock Hazlehurst-Nationalsrematch.

Cunningham was relieved by Cole Newell who gave up apair of sixth inning hits, singles by Seth Cliburn and Warren Hood.Hazlehurst had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the first butBrookhaven went ahead 2-1 in the second.

Hood, the losing pitcher, fanned 4 and walked 4. He wasreplaced by Bennet Wilson in the fifth.

The Nationals finished with 6 hits, led by Jeremy Jameswho had a single and 3 RBIs. Jonathan Davey drove in 2 runs with asingle. Bradley Allred, Drew Case, Mikell Hall and Russell Elliottsingled as the Nationals exploded for 4 runs in the fourth to takea 6-1 lead.

Americans 10, C. Springs 2

Rebounding from a 3-0 Saturday night loss to Hazlehurst,the Americans collected 10 runs on 6 hits against Crystal Springs.They overcame a 10-strikeout, 6-walk performance by losing pitcherDavid Hobkirk.

Josh Coone was the winning pitcher. He struck out 8 andwalked 4, allowing just 2 hits.

At the plate, a grand slam homer by Daniel Watson, plusa pair of 2-run singles, accounted for 8 of Brookhaven’s runs. ZachWatson doubled. Brandon Smith and Chase Covingtonsingled.

Crystal Springs got a single from Ben Stevens and ahomer from Hobkirk in the fifth.
