Americans sweep Nationals 6-1, 12-6

The Brookhaven American All-Stars are on their way to the DixieYouth Baseball Major League District Tournament Monday, July 16, atthe Windsor Gay Youth Sports Complex in Summit.

In Friday night’s two games, the Americans (4-1) held off thepreviously undefeated Brookhaven Nationals for a 6-1 in the firstmust-win game and followed up with a 12-6 victory for the NorthSubdistrict Tournament championship. The Nationals finished tourneywith a 3-2 record.

The Americans will face South champ McComb at 6 p.m. The hostteam Summit will battle the West champ Natchez at 8. The winner ofthe double-elimination tournament advances to the state tournamentin Hattiesburg. The tourney begins Monday, July 30.

Americans 6, Nationals 1

The the first game, the Americans led 1-0 in the firstinning but the Nationals came back to tie the game at 1-1 in thebottom of the second.

Following four scoreless innings, the Americans explodedfor five unanswered run for the 6-1 lead and eventualwin.

Posting the victory was Zack Watson with fivestrikeouts, one walk and one hit batter. Tyler Cunningham absorbedthe loss in six innings with eight strikeouts, nine walks and onehit batter. Working the seventh inning was Jeremy James with onestrikeout recorded.

Powering the Americans with a single apiece were DanielWatson and Robbie Coone.

For the Nationals, Bradley Allred singled twice for theNationals.

Americans 12, Nationals 6

In the championship game, Josh Coone nailed down thevictory with four strikeouts and six walks. Cole Newell absorbedthe loss with five strikeouts and four walks.

The Americans picked up a grand slam home run and adouble from Keith Franklin. Taylor Newman singled.

Will Thibodeaux paced the Nationals with a pair ofsingles. Drew Case tripled. Doubling was Newell. Russell Elliottand Cunningham singled.
