Lawrence County girls host Florence Saturday

MONTICELLO – The Lawrence County Lady Cougars will entertain theFlorence Lady Eagles Saturday afternoon starting at 3 p.m. in thesecond round of the state Class 3A state slowpitch softballplayoffs. It is a best-of-three series.

In other area state playoff action Saturday, Brookhaven visitsNortheast Lauderdale in Class 4A, starting at 1 p.m. Wesson hostsBiloxi Mercy Cross at 4 p.m. In Class 1A, Bogue Chitto plays atUnion at 1 p.m. and West Lincoln visits Nanah Waiya, starting at 12noon.

Lawrence County, a runner-up to Division 6-4A champ Brookhaven,eliminated George County’s Lady Rebels Tuesdasy at Lucedale in thefirst round best-of-three series.

George County won the opener 8-0 but Lawrence County came backto snatch the next two games 17-16 in nine innings and 8-3 in thefinale.

“It will be hard to beat our team in the best 2 of 3 series,”said Lawrence County softball coach Patsy Sandifer. “We have a teamthan can dig deep and make things happen for ourselves. We may makea few mistakes on the field but we will make up for them.

“We have a team who has shown throughout our season that we playthe entire game, not just part of it,” added Sandifer. “We have adepth to our roster in which we can challenge each other to makeour team better.”

George County 8, Lawrence Co. 0

Powering Lawrence County with a single apiece in the first gamewere Brooke Nelson, Robbi Dampier, Ashley Davis and AllieWilliamson.

George County outhit Lawrence County 14-4.

Lawrence County 17, George County 16

In the nine-inning, second game. Lawrence County rallied for tworuns in the bottom of the ninth to pull out the win after GeorgeCounty scored once in the top of the inning to go up 16-15.

Amanda Givens directed the Lady Cougars with four hits. AshleyAutman, Williamson and Davis collected three singles apiece.Hitting a pair of singles was Dampier. Avery Barham, Jasmine Lewis,Kari Martin and Stacey Smith singled.

In a hitter’s game, the Lady Cougars collected 19 hits and theLady Rebels followed with 14 hits.

Lawrence County 8, George County 3

In the final game, Nelson ripped three hits to lead LawrenceCounty. Autman, Davis, Stephanie Dexter, Givens and Smith finishedwith two singles apiece. Lewis and Williamson hit safely.

The Lady Cougars outhit the Lady Rebels 15-9.
