Wesson tunes up for playoffs

WESSON – After dusting off Hinds AHS 42-0 Friday night in thefinal game of the regular season, the Wesson Cobras can prepare tohost the first round of the Class 2A state football playoffs thisweek. The game kicks off at 7:30 p.m. Friday night in Stone Stadiumon the Co-Lin campus.

Wesson (9-1, 5-0) is the Region 6-2A champ and will host Region5 No. 4 team Kemper County (2-8. 2-3). Kemper County fell to regionnemesis South Leake (6-4, 3-2) 24-0 Friday.

“We preached to our kids it (Hinds AHS) was not a team to letdown on,” said Greer. “We had a chance to let our younger kidsplay, beginning in the second quarter. I am very pleased with theirperformance.”

Wesson roared out to a 28-0 lead in the first quarter and added14 points in the second quarter to go ahead 42-0 at halftime.

Wesson senior runningback Marcus Corley scored two first-quartertouchdowns, one coming on a run of 20 yards and caught a 12-yardpass from quarterback Jason Shannon for the second. Also scoring inthe first quarter was senior runningback Billy Ray Miller with atwo-yard TD and Ryan Williams with a 32-yard pass-interceptionreturn for the fourth TD. Nick Gunter kicked 6 of 6 extrapoints.

In the second quarter, Billy Ray Miller rushed for a two-yardtouchdown and senior Richie Miller returned a pass interception 55yards for a TD and a 42-0 lead.

“We are excited about what the kids did in this season,” addedGreer. “Our kids are looking forward to state.”

Wesson had eight first downs and 133 total offensive yards. TheCobras rushed the football 16 times for 121 yards.

Billy Ray Miller led Wesson with seven rushes for 44 yards.Emanuel Sinclair rushed twice for 30 yards.

Defensively, tackle Matt Dyess powered the Cobras with 13tackles in two quarters of play. Charles Powell, Williams and BillyRay Miller collected five tackles apiece in the first half. RichieMiller intercepted two passes.
