Loyd Star boys, Bogue Chitto girls get victories

Loyd Star and Bogue Chitto both got some satisfaction Tuesdaynight in Loyd Star’s gymnasium. The Bogue Chitto girls made asuccessful debut, edging the Lady Hornets 48-45 and the Loyd Starboys remained undefeated, beating the Bobcats 53-37 in varsityaction.

The Loyd Star and Bogue Chitto football teams are both involvedin the state playoffs so next action for the boys basketball teamsis tentative at best. Neither basketball team was at full strengthlast night.

Thursday’s Enterprise/Loyd Star games, varsity and junior high,have been rescheduled for Dec. 6, at Loyd Star.

The Lady Bobcats (1-0) managed to escape with ahard-fought victory, led by point guard Jessica Melton’s game-high21 points. Center Yolanda Drummond added 11 points.

Bogue Chitto girls coach Mickey Myers has been away fromthe team while his wife, Karen, underwent treatment for a rare formof esophagus cancer in New Orleans. Retired West Lincoln coach JackCase was hired as a substitute teacher and coach three weeks agowhen Myers took a leave of absence.

Myers and Case both sat on the bench last night andMyers did most of the coaching. They watched Melton and Drummondsink free throws in the last 11 seconds to hold off LoydStar.

The Lady Hornets had pulled within 46-45 with 17 secondsleft to play on a trey by guard Jamakia Henderson. She missed afree throw on the same play which would have tied the score andBogue Chitto’s Randi Moak rebounded the ball.

“We seemed to be totally out of sync tonight and I taketotal responsibility,” said Myers. “We are happy to get out of herewith a win.”

Myers praised the young Loyd Star team which lost sevenseniors to graduation. “Loyd Star has some good young kids and theyare ready to play.”

Myers said his wife would begin a second cycle ofradiation and chemo therapy on Nov. 27.

The Lady Hornets got 13 points and 8 rebounds fromHenderson, a junior. Center Ava Brown had 10 points and 5rebounds.

“Our goal is to get better every game,” said Loyd Starcoach Lori Britt. Her team trailed 24-17 at halftime but the LadyHornets got a 32-32 deadlock on a free throw by Jordan Britt. Moakresponded with a trey from the corner for a 35-32 lead and the Lady’Cats never lost the advantage.

The Hornets (2-0) were powered by sophomore point guardJared Britt’s 14 points. Jessie Sones chipped in 12 points andJamie Johnson 10.

Loyd Star boys coach Gene “Moochie” Britt said threepotential starters were still playing football. “I sure don’t wantto play any division games without a full team and we are supposedto play at McLaurin Monday night.

“We didn’t have any seniors on the floor tonight,” Brittcontinued. “It’s good to see what our younger players cando.”

The Hornets broke open a close game with a 21-pointthird quarter, expanding their advantage to 47-28. Bogue Chitto,coached by Theo “Bo” Black, is missing two senior starters inDenard Ferguson and Dominique Addison who are star tailbacks forthe football team.

The Bobcats got 13 points from standout guard CarlosBrown and 10 from Brian Wallace.

Junior High Action

In the junior high girls game, Bogue Chitto roared to a45-8 victory, powered by Meleah Brown’s 8 points and LorendaPorter’s 7. Loyd Star got 3 points from Kristen Newell and BrittanyBrown.

In the boys game, Bogue Chitto romped to a 46-17triumph, led by Cory Washington’s 16 points. Maurice Upkins added12 points and Dantae Ratcliff 11.

The Hornets got 8 points from Gary Johnson and 7 fromTyler Williford.
