It was payback time Tuesday night at Loyd Star and McLaurin’sTigers suffered the consequences. Loyd Star avenged two Division6-2A setbacks as Beth Smith sacked a trey to give the Lady Hornetsa 62-61 overtime win. The Hornets whipped McLaurin

67-52 in the varsity boys game, led by Demarcus Barnes whoscored 18 points.

The Lady Hornets (3-4, 2-2) were led on the backboardsby Jamakia Henderson with 13 rebounds plus 20 points. Shara Johnsonhad 9 rebounds and 4 steals. Point guard Whitney Hedgepeth had 7rebounds and 5 assists.

“I was a big district win for us,” said Loyd Star girlscoach Lori Britt. “They were unbeaten in district.

“They beat us 22 (56-34) last time so this was a bigturnaround for us,” Britt noted.

The Hornets (5-2, 2-2) were led on the backboards byBarnes with 12 rebounds and 6 assists. Jamie Johnson and JermaineHunter each had 9 rebounds. Jared Britt had 16 points and made 6steals and Barnes 4. Johnson blocked 2 shots.

“Our press really hurt them,” aid Loyd Star coach Gene”Moochie” Britt. “We made them turn it over in the second quarterand scored 23 points. We did a good job on thebackboards.”

Loyd Star avenged a 4-point loss at McLaurin Nov. 19,when several Hornets were still involved in the state footballplayoffs. McLaurin had refused to postpone the games.

Loyd Star hosts St. Joseph Friday night for varsityaction.
