Panthers gun down Bo’ Chitto

Guards Fred Mackabee and Brandon Caston conducted a shootingclinic Friday night in Sinclair Gymnasium. They both scored 24points, leading the Brookhaven Panthers to a 90-69 thumping of theBogue Chitto Bobcats.

Brookhaven (10-2) resumes play this week in the McComb Coca-ColaInvitational Tournament. The Panthers play Amite, La. on Thursdayat 12:30 p.m. The Lady Panthers play Dexter at 2 p.m.

Bogue Chitto sees its next action Jan. 4, 2002, hosting Mt.Hermon, La.

Caston, a junior, and Mackabee, a senior, powered Brookhaven toa 48-34 halftime lead over the outmanned Bobcats. Caston pumped in5 treys in the game and the Panthers sacked a season-high 11 frombehind the arc.

“This was our best shooting effort,” said Brookhaven coach DanPresley. “We shot the threes well tonight. We got some good gamesout of Fred and Caston. They both are leaders for us.”

Presley watched 11 of his players put points on the scoreboard.Bogue Chitto (8-2) produced a strong start in the second quarterbut the Bobcats couldn’t keep pace with the Class 4A Panthers.

A putback by BC’s Dorian Dunn had pushed the Bobcats ahead by 6points, 25-19 with 5:58 left in the first half. They led 30-26 onDenard Ferguson’s jumper before the Panthers went on a powerfulrun, showing their potential.

Brookhaven outscored the visitors 22-4 the rest of the firsthalf as Caston caught fire. He scored 11 points during the run.Caston’s 2 free throws gave Brookhaven a 32-30 lead with 2:25showing and the Bobcats never recovered.

Down 14 points at halftime, Coach Theo Black had three of hisBobcats, Michael Blackwell, Denard Ferguson and Dunn, sporting 3personal fouls.

“Brookhaven was too big for us,” said Black. “They had too muchdepth and we couldn’t match up with them. They have a good insidegame.”

Southpaw guard Carlos Brown directed Bogue Chitto’s offensivewith 22 points. Domenick Addison, Bogue Chitto’s All-Region 4-1Asenior tailback, scored 13. Dunn netted 10.
