Wesson sweeps Richland for 2nd straight wins

WESSON – The Wesson boys and girls are both on a two-gamewinning streak after pounding the Richland Rangers in varsitybasketball action Friday night.

Powered by senior Richie Miller’s 15 points, seven rebounds andfour steals, the host Cobras gunned down the Ranger team for a59-47 win.

In the girls game, senior Kail Baldwin fired in 11 points,grabbed eight rebounds and made three steals to spark Wesson in a34-18 victory over Richland.

The Cobras (3-8) struck quickly in the first quarter fora 13-6 lead. At halftime, the Rangers (2-8) cut the deficit to fourpoints, 23-19. Third quarter action saw Wesson push its lead to 11points, 39-28, going into the final frame.

Contributing to the Wesson win with 14 points and sevenrebounds was Marcus Corley. Roderick Clay and Billy Ray Millerfollowed with 10 points apiece. Clay led off the backboards with 13rebounds followed by David Smith with 11 rebounds.

“I was pleased the way we handled them (Richland) withour spread offense,” said Wesson boys coach Billy O. Brittfollowing the win. The Cobras spread their offense out late in thefourth quarter and forced the Rangers to foul.

For Richland, forward Bryant Jenkins led with 17 points.Netting 16 points was Levon Williams.

The Lady Cobras (2-10) led off the first quarter,posting a 10-2 lead over the Lady Rangers (1-11) and hanging on toa 17-11 edge at the half. Both teams were held to four points inthe third quarter before the Lady Cobras blew out the Lady Rangers12-4 in the final frame.

“I was pleased,” said Wesson girls coach Scott Johnsonof the second win in two nights. “We outrebounded them attimes.”

Adding support to the Wesson win with seven points wasHayley Carr. Maggie Johnson collected nine rebounds followed byAnna Johnson with seven rebounds.

LaChandra Wallace led the Lady Rangers with six pointsand five rebounds.

The Wesson junior high teams will participate in theMid-South Tournament beginning Monday night at West Lincoln. Thetournament also will be played on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday.The varsity Cobra teams visit St. Andrews Tuesday for three gamesand are at Hinds AHS Friday, Jan. 11, for three games.
