Rancifer lifts Lady Panthers to victory

RAYMOND -With 1.1 seconds left to play, Brookhaven’s ChiquitaRancifer hit a short jumper, lifting the Lady Panthers to a narrow58-56 Tuesday night victory over the Raymond girls. Brookhaven hadregained possession of the basketball with seven seconds left toplay.
“Chiquita threw it in; they trapped Aneidra (Stanton) and shepassed to Chiquita,” said Brookhaven girls coach Ronald Gill. “Shewent the length of the floor and made the shot. It was a big winfor us.”
Brookhaven climbed to 15-1 overall and 2-0 in Division 6-4A.
Offensively, Brookhaven was led by junior center Ayana Tillmanwith 18 points and 7 rebounds. Shamika Gilmore added 10 points and8 rebounds. Stanton made 3 assists and 2 steals.
“Raymond has two real good guards,” said Gill. “We got in foultrouble early but we showed a lot of character.”
Guard Almammy Marshall led Raymond and all scorers with 25points. The Lady Rangers are defending Class 4A state champions.They won the 3A title in 2000.
Brookhaven resumes play Friday night at Lawrence County.
