Co-Lin teams win two from Hinds Eagles

UTICA – The Co-Lin Wolves and Lady Wolves swept the Hinds Eaglesmens and womens teams in South Division action Thursday night.

The Co-Lin men won 68-61 over Hinds and the Lady Wolves whippedthe Lady Eagles 76-42.

The Co-Lin men (5-8, 2-1) held a two-point, 32-30, leadover the Eagles at the half. Sophomore point guard Bruce Smith wasinstrument in the win at the end from the free throwline.

Smith netted two free throws to put Co-Lin up 67-64 with29.3 seconds left to play. Smith was fouled again at the 14.4 markand nailed two more freebies for a 68-64 lead and win.

Hinds final shot missed its mark as Smith got thedefensive rebound and secured the win.

“We played good defense and defended well tonight,” saidCo-Lin men’s head coach Dennis Sims. “This was probably one of ourbest defensive efforts in a long while, that and making our freethrows helped us when we needed it the most.”

Directing the Wolves to the win with 18 points wassophomore forward B.J. Black. Freshman guard Jason Scott followedwith 15 points. Netting 10 points apiece were Carl Minor and B.Smith.

Hinds got a game-high 26 points from EdwardMack.

The Lady Wolves (13-0, 3-0) held a 44-20 lead over theLady Eagles at halftime. Co-Lin outscored Hinds 32-22, including an11-0 run with 11:05 remaining in the second half to secured thewin.

With six seconds remaining in the game, Co-Lin freshmenfor guard Ayme Beeson was fouled hard by Hinds sophomore guardShaRhonda Welch. After collecting the foul, her fifth, Welch thenwas restrained for attempting to go after Beeson for no reason.Security escorted her off the court.

“This was another good win for us tonight,” said Co-Linwomen’s head coach Gwyn Young. “We still need to do a better jobdefending and working our offense. But overall, it gave us a chanceto give all of our players on the roster valuable playingtime.”

Leading Co-Lin with 19 points, five rebounds, two stealsand two blocks was freshman guard Tiania Burns. Adding support with10 points was Shaquita Smith.

Hinds got 15 points from Kristy Sanders.
