Hornets hold off Wesson Cobras

The Loyd Star boys placed four players in double figures Fridaynight as the host Hornets put together an explosive 14-9 fourthquarter to secure a hard-fought 61-57 Division 6-2A win over theWesson Cobras.

In the varsity girls game, Beth Smith pumped in 17 points andgrabbed six rebounds to spark the Lady Hornets to a 56-30 win overthe Lady Cobras.

Directing Loyd Star (14-5, 6-4) with 15 points, six rebounds andthree assists was senior Seth Britt. Jermaine Hunter netted 14points and pulled down nine rebounds. Jarred Britt scored 13points, collected 10 rebounds and blocked two shots. Finishing with10 points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals was DemarcusBarnes. Jamie Johnson netted nine points and grabbed 11rebounds.

“We made a great comeback in the fourth quarter,” said Loyd Starboys coach Gene “Moochie” Britt. “We pulled it out. I’d like topraise the kids for hanging in there and playing tough.”

Wesson (3-14, 1-6) led for the first three quarters, 14-13,32-29 and 48-47. Seth Britt hit a three-pointer and field goal tocut the deficit to 48-47 at the end of the third quarter.

The Hornets went up by three-points, 52-49, on a Seth Brittthree-pointer with 5:33 left to play. With 3:44 left, Loyd Star ledWesson 56-50.

Senior forward Richie Miller paced Wesson with 19 points. DavidSmith made 13 points followed by Roderick Clay with 11 points.

The Lady Hornets (12-7, 7-3) shot well the first quarter and led17-5 over the Lady Cobras. Wesson (2-16, 0-7) shot better in thesecond quarter but couldn’t stop Loyd Star which put together a30-16 lead at halftime.

In the second half, Loyd Star outscored Wesson 8-7 in the thirdquarter and bounced back in the final frame for an 18-8 run tosecure the win.

“I was proud of our free throw shooting,” said Loyd Star girlscoach Lori Britt. Her team made 18 of 28 charity shots.

Adding support to the win for Loyd Star with 13 points, 12rebounds, three steals and two assists was Jamakia Henderson.Jordan Britt netted nine points. Pulling down six rebounds was AvaBrown.

Kail Baldwin led Wesson with 13 points. Channell McCroryfollowed with seven points.

“We switched around our defense,” said Wesson girls coach ScottJohnson. “We played good. They hustled. We got after them.”

Junior high games

The Loyd Star boys dumped Wesson 46-23. Brad Fells led theHornets with 24 points. Tyler Williford finished with 13points.

Corey Puckett led Wesson with 14 points. Netting nine points wasMason Warren.

In the junior high girls game, Wesson posted a 20-12 win overLoyd Star. Amber Restive led Loyd Star with six points.

Wesson got four points from Alexis Corley, Christy Watson andMare Sims.

Loyd Star visits St. Joseph Tuesday night.
