Trojans tame Wolves 5-0

MOOREHEAD – The Mississippi Delta Trojans defeated the Co-LinWolves 5-0 in nine innings Thursday night.
Mississippi Delta (2-5) took the lead 1-0 in the third off aBrett Creda single that scored Josh Mosley. Trojan sophomore CaseySmith added a double to score Cerda for a comfortable 2-0 lead.
In the fourth, Delta added two more runs off a Johnny Phillipstwo-run homer. That homer sent Co-Lin starter and Brookhavenproduct Miguel Banks to the bench and freshman Cole Zumbro to themound.
Banks went three and a half innings, allowing five hits, fourruns and two walks. He issued three strikeouts.
In the fifth, Co-Lin coach Keith Case was ejected from the gamefor arguing several first base calls. Case’s ejection lead to apair of singles by second baseman Matt Lea and freshman ParisDarcy. But the Delta defense ended the Wolves chances of scoringwith great defense.
Zumbro was replaced in the seventh by sophomore hurler andMississippi State signee Derek Atkins. Atkins allowed one run onhit hit. Zumbro finished with two and a half innings of play withthree strikeouts on four walks, one home run allowed, three hitsand no runs.
After Brookhaven product Kendall Poole kept the Trojans silentin the eighth with a strikeout and grounders, Co-Lin (5-2) enteredthe ninth looking for a rally. Delta would end any chances of thatwith supreme defense and excellent fielding that resulted in Deltaclaiming the upset.
Banks collected the loss while Delta sophomore David Griggsearned the win. Griggs pitched seven and a third innings, allowingfive hits and two walks. He issued six strikeouts.
At the plate, Co-Lin was led by outfielders Dancy and ArlandusBrown with two singles apiece.
Phillips led Delta with a homer and a single. Cerda added twohits safely.
The Wolves visit Southwest, Tenn. in Memphis Saturday for adoubleheader.
