Brookhaven man charged in thefts

MONTICELLO — A Brookhaven man was arrested Thursday inconnection with two daytime house burglaries in Lawrence County,according to authorities.
William E. Hughes, 33, of Eastview Street, was charged with twocounts of house burglary by the Lawrence County Sheriff’sDepartment after stolen merchandise was discovered at his home,said Chief Deputy Willie Wallace.
Deputies recovered a video cassette recorder (VCR), compactdiscs (CDs), binoculars, a radio, a flash light and a jar ofpennies that had been reported stolen from the Shiloh BaptistChurch parsonage on Nola Road Wednesday, according to Wallace.
“It all fell together real good, and we got all the stuff back(that was taken) from the preacher’s house,” he said.
Wallace complimented the efforts of deputy Chris Cox, with whomhe worked on the case.
“Officer Cox did a good job working on this,” said Wallace.
A coin collection stolen on May 1 from another home on Nola Roadwas not recovered in the search.
Hughes had allegedly used the stolen coins to buy items at agrocery store in Monticello and a convenience store in Brookhaven.Hughes was working on a road project near the Nola Road residencesduring the last two weeks.
Hughes is being held in the Lawrence County Jail and wasexpected to appear for an initial hearing to set bond Fridaymorning.
