Brakemen beat Pearl Patriots

The Brookhaven Brakemen recovered from consecutive extra-inningsetbacks to beat the Pearl Patriots 5-1 in Saturday’s Cotton StateLeague finale on the Belhaven College field. Brookhaven lost a9-inning decision Friday night at Poplarville, falling to theCSL-leading Rivercats 2-1. They went 13 innings in Saturday’sopener with Pearl before bowing 4-3.

The Brakemen (5-11) entertain Clinton today for a 2:30doubleheader on Brookhaven Academy’s diamond.

Tyler Peret went the distance for Brookhaven, throwing a3-hitter. He struck out 7 batters and walked 1.

Dan Rives was the losing pitcher. He gave up 5 runs on 10 hits,striking out 5, walking 2 and hitting 1 batter.

Collecting 2 hits for the Brakemen were Lofton, Wallace and JoeySullivan. Josh Thoms, Anthony McLin, Josh Garrett and JacobBlakeney singled for Brookhaven.

A triple by Antoine Ragland led Pearl in batting.

Pearl 4, Brookhaven 3

Two Brookhaven errors in the 13th frame helped Pearl pull outthe victory with 2 unearned runs.

Blakeney started on the mound and went 7 innings. He gave up 2runs on 3 hits, struck out 9 and walked 2.

Michael Edwards replaced Blakeney in the eighth. He went 5.1innings and took the loss. He gave up 2 runs on 4 hits, fanned 3and walked 3.

Jared White went the distance for Pearl and claimed the marathonwin. In 13 innings, he gave up 3 unearned runs on 9 hits, strikingout 7 and walking 2.

First baseman Nathan Purvis led Pearl with a 3-for-6performance. Centerfielder Brett Holmes and shortstop Dan Rives had2 hits.

Two hits by Ben Davis and Seth Lofton led Brookhaven’s 9-hitattack. Wallace, Thoms, Ben Goza, Aaron Oberschmidt and Sullivansingled.

Poplarville 2, Brookhaven 1

In the ninth, Byrd led off with a single, stole second, went tothird on a wild pitch and scored on a pickoff play at second.

Garrett gave up 1 run on 3 hits. He struck out 8 batters andwalked 2.

In the eighth frame, Cass Brister replaced Garrett. He gave up 1hit and 1 run. He walked 1 batter.

Chris Stewart went 7.1 innings for the Rivercats. He gave up 2hits and 1 run, striking out 9 and walking 2.

Stewart was replaced Chris Bucano. He went 1.2 innings and gotthe win. He held the Brakemen hitless.

Anthony McLin and Jacob Blakeney singled for Brookhaven.

Blakeney led off the fourth inning with a single and stolesecond. He went to third on a passed ball. Cayce Wallace’s grounderscored Blakeney.

Rightfielder Justin Byrd and second baseman Garrett Drakedoubled and singled for the Rivercats.
