‘SilentParade’ on 9-11

A Silent Parade through downtown Brookhaven on Wednesday, Sept.11, will honor victims of last year’s tragedies in New York,Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C., and pay tribute to emergencyservices workers.

“We thought it would be a good way to remember the Sept. 11tragedy and recognize our police, fire, civil defense and emergencymedical services personnel,” said Chandler Russ, executivevice-president of the Brookhaven-Lincoln County Chamber ofCommerce.

The parade will begin at 11:30 a.m. at the government complexwith the singing of the National Anthem. The parade will then windthrough downtown and end at Lampton Auditorium around noon.

Citizens are encouraged to bring U.S. flags and line the paraderoute.

“Ideally, we’d like our public officials and citizens to fall inand follow the parade to Lampton,” Russ said.

At Lampton Auditorium, citizens will join in singing “God BlessAmerica” and a prayer will conclude the event.

Chamber officials said speakers are being lined up to lead thevarious activities. Russ said idea of a Silent Parade started in aNorth Carolina community and officials thought it would be a goodthing for Brookhaven to follow.

“This will be a day when we’ll have an opportunity to show ourappreciation to our emergency services personnel and reflect on theevents that happened last Sept. 11,” Russ said.
