Burns leads Lady Wolves to victory in season debut

WESSON – Playmaker Tiania Burns picked up where she left offlast season. Burns scored Co-Lin’s first two points of the 2002-03basketball campaign and finished with a game-high 21, leading theLady Wolves to a 90-53 Thursday night thrashing of the HolmesCommunity College women in Mullen Gymnasium.
Burns, a 5-8 guard from Nashville, Tenn., earned All-Americanhonors as a freshman at Co-Lin. She hopes to lead the team toanother state and regional tournament championship.
“I’m trying to be a leader on this team and take us to arepeat,” said Burns. “I think this year’s team has more quicknessand speed. We lost our post players but we’ll be okay.”
Burns had 15 of her points by halftime as Co-Lin claimed a 47-28advantage. Her 15-foot jumper from the right elbow gave the LadyWolves a 24-point, 61-37 advantage with 13:54 left to play.
Co-Lin head coach Gwyn Young said he was encouraged by histeam’s season-opening performance. “I liked what I saw tonight.Defensively, we had a good effort. Our players got after it. Theydived after balls.”
Freshmen forwards Victoria Richardson of Hazlehurst and LorettaMartin of Kenner, La., showcased their talents last night, scoring15 and 14 points respectively. Richardson also had 8 rebounds and 3steals. Martin grabbed 7 rebounds and 5-11 freshman LaurenWilliamson of Mendenhall grabbed 8 boards.
Co-Lin sophomore guard Ayme Beeson contributed 8 assists for theLady Wolves who are ranked No. 10 in the NJCAA Preseason Poll.Sophomore forward Lindsay Altman nailed 3 jumpers in a 5-minutespan to start the second half, helping forge the 24-pointadvantage.
Holmes, coached by Chanda Rigby, got 15 points from LatriceRone, a 5-6 guard from Lake Village, Ark. Melissa Winters, a 5-6guard from McCool, added 12 points.
Co-Lin is scheduled to play at Mississippi Delta in MoorheadSaturday afternoon and host Coahoma Monday night.
