Lady ‘Cats turn back Loyd Star

BOGUE CHITTO – The Bogue Chitto girls are healthy again whileLoyd Star’s Lady Hornets are still in rehab. Led by Meleah Brown’s15 points and Kia Porter’s 12, the Lady ‘Cats dumped Loyd Star62-50 Tuesday night before a near-capacity crowd in R.L. “Bob”Calhoun gymnasium.
Bogue Chitto (2-0), under the direction of Coach Mickey Myers,overcame a slow start to hand Loyd Star a season-opening setback.Porter, one of three Lady ‘Cats to suffer a torn ACL last season,pumped in 3 treys to spark a second-half surge.
The Lady ‘Cats had to cope with center Yolanda Drummond’sserious foul trouble. She picked up her fifth personal foul with3:24 left to play and BC leading by 13 points, 58-45.
Loyd Star pulled within 9 points, 59-50, on a pair of freethrows by guard Sarah Lofton and 2:47 left but could come no closeras the Lady ‘Cats used an effective delay game.
“Yolanda coming out created a difficult situation for us becauseLoyd Star is so big,” explained Myers. “We did a good job on ourdelay game.”
Drummond finished with 13 points, 13 rebounds
and 2 blocked shots. All-Lincoln County guards Jessica Meltonand Randi Moak scored 9 and 7 points respectively. Melton made 8assists and Moak had 8 rebounds.
“I was impressed with Loyd Star,” Myers continued. “They are sobig and physical. They have good post people.”
Most effective in the paint for Loyd Star was 5-11 senior centerAva Brown who accounted for 18 rebounds and 14 points. Southpawguard Jamakia Henderson followed with 13 points, 7 rebound and 2steals.
The Lady Hornets, coached by Lori Britt, were minus startingpoint guard Jordan Britt who has strained ligaments in a foot andcenter-forward Ashton Williams who is recovering from ACL surgerylast summer. Williams might be able to play before Christmas.
“We have two key players out in point guard Jordan Britt andpost Ashton Williams,” said Britt. “This was our first game and Ithought our girls played hard.”
Britt was encouraged by her team’s strong rebounding effort.Shara Johnson and Maggie Sellars each had 7 rebounds. Johnsonscored 10 points and Sellars made 3 assists.
Loyd Star made several runs but couldn’t catch the Lady ‘Cats inthe second half. A rebound and putback by Meleah Brown pushed BCahead by 15 points, 58-43, with 4:05 left in the game.
Junior High Results
In the preliminary junior high girls game, Bogue Chitto whippedLoyd Star 37-16, led by Chelsey Miller’s 11 points. Candace Avantsadded 7 points. Latoya Braxton and Devon Welch each had 6points.
Loyd Star got 9 points from Heather Carmichael.
