Brookhaven wins in Brandon tourney

BRANDON – Kristian McCrey pumped in 16 points and Ayana Tillman14 Tuesday, leading the Brookhaven Lady Panthers to a 61-44 triumphover McLaurin’s girls in the Brandon Tournament. Brianna Pattonchipped in 11 points as the Lady Panthers raised their record to4-2 on the season.

Brookhaven’s boys blasted Brandon 80-64 last night, directed byBrandon Caston and Dexter Middleton with 14 and 12 pointsrespectively. Jonathan Pickett chipped in 10 points.

Coach Billy Holmes sends his Lady Panthers against NorthwestRankin at 4 p.m. in Thursday’s semifinals. The Panthers playMcLaurin Thursday night at 7:45. Win or lose, Brookhaven will playSaturday, either in the consolation or championship games.

Friday’s McComb-Brookhaven game at BHS has been postponed untilMonday, Nov. 25, due to Brookhaven’s participation in the Class 4Astate football playoffs.,

The Lady Panthers were strong on the backboardsand they gave a good effort on defense, according to Coach Holmes.”Our full-court pressure man defense was very effective,” saidHolmes.

On the backboards, Tillman and McCrey each had 9 rebounds.Patton had 6 boards and Shamika Gilmore 5.

Chiquita Rancifer provided the Lady Panthers with 5 assists andPatton made four. Senior playmaker Aneidra Stanton is slowed by aknee injury and played half the game.

McLaurin got 16 points from Ashley McLin. The Lady Tigerstrailed 35-21 at halftime.

The Panthers (6-0) also played well on defense,according to BHS boys coach Ronald Hines. “Our kids played prettywell on defense. The intensity was good.”

Brookhaven roared to a 22-6 first-quarter lead and led Brandon50-31 at halftime.

The Panthers accounted for 24 rebounds and overcame 23turnovers. On the backboards, Jaspar Hall, Lamar Hall and JermaineCulver each had 4 rebounds.

Middleton accounted for 6 steals and Pickett had 4.

The Panthers were cold from 3-point range, going 0-for-10.

The Bulldogs got a game-high 22 points from Kenneth Walker.Avery Presley added 16 points.
