BA teams take crowns

Anna Gatlin scored 13 points and Jessie Altman 11 in leading theunbeaten Brookhaven Academy Lady Cougars to a 49-31 Saturday nighttriumph over Copiah Academy in the championship finals of the BANew Year’s Tournament in John R. Gray Gymnasium.

In the boys finals, Brookhaven Academy blasted Central Hinds71-43 as guard Craig Smith pumped in 30 points. He also had 5rebounds and 5 steals for the unbeaten hosts.

Parklane captured both consolation games.

Brookhaven 71, Central Hinds 43

“I’m pleased with the way our kids played in the second half,”said BA boys coach Dale Watts. “We played at a higher level onoffense and defense after a roller-coaster first half.”

Watts saw his BA Cougars leading Central Hinds 30-24.

On the backboards, Alex Davis led Brookhaven (14-0) with 8rebounds. Jimmy Latham had 10 points and 5 steals.

Brookhaven 49, Copiah 31

On the backboards, Anna Gatlin grabbed 7 rebounds and JessieAltman 6. Kelli Byrd made 3 assists and 3 steals. Mallory Loganmade 3 steals.

“Our half-court defense was a lot better tonight,” said BA girlscoach Barry Gray whose girls improved to 22-0. “Copiah had a hardtime doing what they wanted to do. Our girls played hard.”

Parklane 54, Simpson County 43

In the girls consolation game, Hillary Branch led the LadyPioneers with 15 points. Michelle Cochran and Rebecca Brabham eachhad 12 points.

Simpson County got 14 points from Adrianne Lee.

Parklane 64, Simpson County 51

Directing the Pioneers to victory was Lance Newlon with 21points. Benton Turnage added 17 points.

Simpson County got 14 points from Kory White.
