Brookhaven tracksters in state track meet Fri.

On Friday, Coaches Patrick Hardy and Rod Henderson will take sixmembers of the Brookhaven High girls and boys track team toJackson. They will participate in the Class 4A State track andfield championships at Hughes Field.

The Lady Panthers, fresh from a third-place finish in the South4A championships at Hancock High, look to come out on top in thefinals. Last year, the Brookhaven girls finished runners-up toeventual state champion Pearl.

Representing the Lady Panthers in Jackson are Kenyata Coleman,Latoria Kerr, Alicia Hawkins, Shalesia Trunner and ElaineSmith.

In the South Mississippi Class 4A meet at Hancock, Colemanfinished first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.43, andqualified in the 200 and 400-meter dashes with second-placefinishes. Kerr qualified with a third-place finish in the highjump. Smith nailed down second in the shot put. Hawkins, Trunner,Kerr and Coleman claimed first-place honors in the 4×100 and4x200-meter relays with times for 50.73 and 1:47.30.

The Panthers will send sophomore Jimmy Johns to the finals. Hequalified in the discus, finishing with a first-place throw of 134feet, 1/2 inches.

Picayune won the South girls title with 103 points. McComb wassecond with 81 and Brookhaven third with 75. West Jones was fourthwith 41 points and Vancleave fifth with 39.

Port Gibson claimed the South 4A boys title with 163 points.
