Man dies following tree-cutting accident

A Lincoln County man who suffered serious head injuries during atree-cutting accident Wednesday died Thursday night at UniversityMedical Center, authorities said.
Nolan Johnson, 28, was pronounced dead by a UMC doctor justbefore midnight Thursday.
“He passed away last night at 11:30 p.m. at UMC,” said LincolnCounty Coroner-Medical Examiner Clay McMorris.
Johnson suffered the fatal injury around 8:30 a.m. Wednesdaywhen he and co-workers were removing limbs from a tree they werepreparing to cut down on West Monticello Street.
A co-worker was cutting a limb about 75-80 feet up when,according to police reports, a portion of the limb fell and struckJohnson, who was standing near the base of the tree.
“It (the limb) was a chunk about 12-14 inches,” said BrookhavenAssistant Police Chief Nolan Jones.
Johnson was rendered unconscious immediately and after receivingmedical treatment at the scene was transported to King’s DaughtersMedical Center. Shortly afterwards, he was taken to UniversityMedical Center via helicopter, where he was reported in criticalcondition.
Funeral arrangements for Johnson, under the direction ofCatchings Funeral Home in McComb, were incomplete Fridaymorning.
