Clinton Arrows take three from Brookhaven

lass 5A Clinton roared into Sinclair Gymnasium Monday night,sweeping 3 games from host Brookhaven. Lady Arrow Sheena Johnsonsacked a 3-point basket with 4.7 seconds left on the clock asClinton escaped with 35-34 win over the Brookhaven LadyPanthers.
The Clinton Arrows, ranked No. 5 in a Jackson newspaper poll,used their quickness to defeat the Brookhaven Panthers 63-51.
Clinton doubled Brookhaven 30-15 in the JV boys game.
Brookhaven travels to Crystal Springs Friday for 3 games,beginning at 5 p.m. with a JV boys game. The varsity girls gametips off at 6 p.m., followed by the varsity boys game around7:30.
Clinton 35, Brookhaven 34
The Lady Panthers (6-5) kept Clinton at bay for most ofthe game. Brookhaven led 5-4 at the end of the first quarter and17-11 at the intermission. Sophomore Portia Dickey ignited the OleBrook surge with 6 points in the second period.
The third period was a virtual standstill, as LadyPanther head coach Billy Holmes saw his team lead 26-21 enteringthe fourth period.
The Lady Arrows (7-4), coached by Gary Miller, saw theirdeficit evaporate within a matter of minutes. Post player Ryan Herdsacked a pair of treys, the latter giving Clinton a 33-32 lead with2:29 left in the game.
Brookhaven would regain the lead moments later on abasket by Chiquita Rancifer at 34-33. Both teams traded severalmiscues before Johnson canned the eventualgame-winner.
Herd led all scorers with 18 points, followed by KatorraLewis with 10 points.
Dickey and Kristian McCray paced Brookhaven with 9points apiece. McCray had 10 rebounds, 2 steals and 3 assists.Rancifer had 2 steals and 3 assists. The Lady Panthers wereoutrebounded 23-22, committing 22 turnovers to Clinton’s20.
“We just did not play well at the end,” saidHolmes.
Clinton 63, Brookhaven 51
The Arrows (10-1) connected from the inside and outsidein taking the early 17-10 first period lead. Jenario Bunton andSernell Williams combined for 3 treys in the opening 8minutes.
Brookhaven (7-4) began to chip away at their deficit inthe second frame, outscoring Clinton 14-9 in the period. ThePanthers trailed 26-24 at halftime, thanks in part to senior RodneyDaniels sacking a 3-point basket from midcourt as the halftimebuzzer sounded.
This was the second consecutive game that Daniels hit atrey from midcourt at the intermission. He drilled one againstSouth Pike last Friday.
Bunton, Williams and point guard Ivory Dishmon usedtheir quickness to garner a 42-35 lead entering the finalstanza.
The Panthers trailed 50-44 on a pair of free throws bysenior center Jasper Hall. That would be as close as Brookhavenwould get. Clinton’s leads grew as big as 14 points.
“They beat us to spots on the floor,” said Brookhavenhead coach Ronald Hines, who was referring to the Arrows’ quicknessat the guard position (Bunton, Dishmon and Williams). “They(Clinton) shot the ball well from the outside.”
Williams led all scorers with 18 points, while Buntonpumped in 16 points. Jarid Gibbs added 14 points for second-yearArrow head coach Bruce Robinson.
Jermaine Culver led the Panthers with 17 points and 5rebounds. Daniels added 14 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals. Hallhad 5 rebounds and 3 blocked shots.
Brookhaven lost the battle of the boards 28-25, and had14 turnovers to Clinton’s 11.
In the JV boys game, Clinton’s Andrew McDonald led allscorers with 8 points. Michael Byrd and Steven Keys scored 4 pointsapiece for Brookhaven.
