Co-Lin teams get revenge on Delgado

WESSON — The Co-Lin Wolves and Lady Wolves got revenge on theDelgado Dolphins Thursday night. On Dec. 16, the Delgado men nippedCo-Lin 84-82 at the buzzer and the Lady Dolphins nipped the LadyWolves 54-50 in New Orleans.
The Wolves, powered by freshman guard Ledell Eackles’ 24 points,handed the Dolphins an 89-64 whipping in Mullen Gymnasium.
In the women’s game, the Lady Wolves enjoyed a 34-20 first-halfcushion and held off the Lady Dolphins for a 65-58 victory.
The Wolves (6-5) went on top of the Dolphins(4-19) 11-10 on a putback by Eackles with 12:41 left in the firsthalf. Delgado trailed Co-Lin the remainder of the game. Athalftime, the Wolves punched out a 17-point, 39-22 lead.
“I thought we looked real good,” said Co-Lin men’s headbasketball coach Dennis Sims following the win. “We played hard. Wetook more charges. It was good to see the kids play hard. Theyplayed as a team.”
In the second quarter, a field goal from Eackles put Co-Lin up20 points, 46-26, with 8:26 left in the game. In the final 34seconds, freshman guard Brandon Caston nailed a pair of free throwsand scored on a layup for an 87-64 lead. Sophomore forward DonLockhart sank a pair of free throws with nine seconds left for the25-point victory.
Scoring 22 points for the Wolves was freshman guard DartezEdwards. Caston netted 14 points and made three steals. JeremyRichardson fired in 11 points and grabbed four rebounds. Tops offthe backboards with six rebounds was Derek Jarvis.
For Tommy L. Smith’s Dolphins, sophomore forward RichardCavalier led with 15 points. Freshman guard Marcus Scott finishedwith 12 points. Center Lonnie Vasquez led off the backboards withsix rebounds.
Co-Lin 65, Delgado 58
Both teams were cold in the opening minutes of play. Co-Linfreshman forward Travalyn Smith gave the Lady Wolves an early 6-4lead on a jumper with 15:54 left in the first half. Co-Lin went onan 11-0 run to go ahead 25-11 with 5:13 left. At halftime, the LadyWolves commanded a 14-point, 34-20 lead.
“It was a good win coming back from the holidays,” said Co-Linwomen’s head coach Gwyn Young. “They (Delgado) have a pretty goodteam. We need to improve on two things. Not make as many turnoversand make our free throw shots.”
The Lady Wolves had 20 turnovers and were 20 of 45 from thefree-throw line.
In the second half, Co-Lin struggled shooting and allowedDelgado to trim the lead down to seven points at the end of thegame.
Sophomore forward Renee Fields led Co-Lin (6-5) with 16 pointsand nine rebounds. Demetrice Jackson, a freshmen guard, pumped in12 points and had three assists. Gloria Lewis and Travalyn Smithcollected 10 points apiece. Smith also grabbed six rebounds. Lewismade four steals.
For the 10-11 Lady Dolphins, sophomore guard Katie Sterling wasthe high scorer of the night with 25 points. Freshman forwardMeagan Stock netted 20 points.
Co-Lin visits Jones County Monday for a doubleheader. The womenbegin play at 6 p.m.
