Services for Agnes Simmons Allen of Hazlehurst are 2 p.m.,Wednesday, Feb. 11, at Hazlehurst United Methodist Church withburial in Hazlehurst Cemetery.

Visitation is Tuesday from 5-7 p.m., at Stringer Family FuneralServices, and Wednesday from 1-2 p.m., at the church.

Mrs. Allen, 81, died Feb. 8, 2004, at Hardy Wilson MemorialHospital. She was born in Walthall County on Jan. 3, 1923, toAlbert Wallace Simmons and Ruby B. McElveen.

She was a 1940 graduate of Hazlehurst High School, and a 1942graduate of Copiah-Lincoln Junior College. She earned a Bachelor ofArts in Education degree in January 1944 from University ofMississippi, where she was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority andserved as Chapter President her senior year. Following graduation,she was employed by the federal government in Jackson in the U.S.Department of Agriculture until February 1946. On March 3, 1946,she married Stephen Ellis Allen Jr., and they moved to Universityof Mississippi, where he enrolled in the School of Law. While hefinished his degree, she served as secretary to the Dean of Womenuntil August 1947. The couple then moved to McComb, where sheworked at an insurance agency, and later to Jackson, where she wasemployed by USF&G insurance company for two years. In July1952, they moved to Hazlehurst, where he began his law practice of50 years. In later years, she worked as an assistant librarian atCovington City Library.

Survivors are her husband, Ellis Allen; her daughter, Lynn Greenof Jackson; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
