Co-Lin sweeps Kishwaukee Kougars

WESSON — Co-Lin welcomed the Kishwaukee (Ill.) CommunityCollege Kougars to sunny Sullivan Field Monday and swept thevisitors in a doubleheader. Co-Lin accounted for 21 hits as theWolves prevailed 3-1 and 8-6.

This is the 18th year for Kishwaukee to stop at Co-Lin duringthe Kougars’ spring tour. They are under the direction of MikeDavenport.

Co-Lin (7-4) hosts Kishwaukee for a 9-inning game today,starting at 1 p.m.

Co-Lin 3, Kishwaukee 1

Freshman right-hander Colby Beach recorded his first Co-Linvictory against Kishwaukee. Beach gave up 5 hits in 5 innings,fanning 5, walking 2 and allowing 1 run.

Freshman Casey Deason replaced Beach in the sixth and got thesave. Deason held Kishwaukee hitless, struck out 2 and walkednone.

“We swung the bat well against two left-handed pitchers,” saidCo-Lin head coach Keith Case. “Kishwaukee did a good job gettingout of jams.

“Colby Beach and Casey Deason did a good job on the moundkeeping them in check,” Case pointed out.

At the plate, Co-Lin finished with 11 hits, led by leftfielderJeffrey Waycaster with 3 hits. Centerfielder Keeyon Sanderstripled. Designated hitter Cole Zumbro and catcher Guy Alleman bothhad 2 hits.

In the bottom of the fourth, Zumbro led off with a double andscored on Alleman’s double. Alleman advanced to third onWaycaster’s single and scored on Aaron Guillot’s single, making it2-0.

In the bottom of the fifth, Sanders tripled and scored on JodyBritt’s infield grounder. The Wolves led 3-1.

Co-Lin sophomore catcher Diego Nucete sat out the doubleheaderfor disciplinary reasons.

Co-Lin 8, Kishwaukee 6

Matthew Fox got the win in relief. In 4 innings, Fox gave up 2hits, no runs, no walks and fanned 1.

Starting pitcher Cole Zumbro twisted his ankle on the last outof the first inning, when he was covering first base. Boycee Barnesreplaced Zumbro on the mound, giving up 2 hits on 4 runs. He walked1 batter and fanned 1.

The Kougars (1-4) capitalized on 3 Co-Lin errors to score 4 runsin the second.

Justin Sykes homered in the bottom of the second and fired upthe Wolves.

A triple by Sanders got a third-inning rally going. Jody Brittslugged a 2-run homer to tie the score at 4-4.

In the fifth, Sanders got a 2-out single and stole second.Patrick Williams produced an RBI single for a 5-4 Co-Lin lead.Williams stole second and scored on a throwing error for a 6-4advantage.

In the sixth, Co-Lin plated 2 more runs. Sykes led off with adouble. Ben Sandifer reached on a pinch-hit single. Guillot’s 2-outdouble scored pinch-runner Beach from first base.

Jacob Leggett got the save after hitting 1 batter and walkinganother in the seventh.
