Whatley no-hits McLaurin

FLORENCE — Loyd Star junior Justin Whatley hurled a no-hitterTuesday night to lead the Hornets in a 10-0 Division 6-2A win overthe McLaurin Tigers. Whatley (2-1) fanned nine batters and walkedfour in the six-inning contest.

“It was exciting for him (Whatley) and the team,” said Loyd Starhead coach Sydney Wheatley of the no-hitter. “When he (Whatley)gets ahead of people, he is hard to beat. He had good velocity onhis fastball. He did a good job.”

Loyd Star (9-10, 5-1) outhit McLaurin 8-0 at the plate. McLaurincommitted three errors to Loyd Star’s one.

Powering the Hornets at the plate was senior catcher MatthewDelaughter with a home run and a double. Whatley added two hits.Austin Fagan belted a triple. Doubling was Tyler Williford. JaredBritt and Patrick Holcomb singled.

“We hit the ball hard,” added Wheatley. “It was good to score alot of runs. We played good defense.”

Loyd Star is back home next Tuesday to begin a tough three-gameseries, starting with Piney Woods for two varsity contests startingat 4:30 p.m.

Next Wednesday, the Hornets visit Madison St. Joe for a 3:30varsity matchup. Loyd Star returns home Thursday to entertain St.Andrew’s for a JV and a varsity game.
