Wesson Cobras clip Panthers

Brookhaven and Wesson closed out their regular seasons Mondaynight at Moyer Field the same way they got started, facing eachother. Unfortunately for eight Ole Brook seniors on Senior Night,the final results would not be a happy memory.

Wesson’s Cobras scored 3 runs in their half of the eighth andheld on for a 6-3, extra-inning win over Ole Brook.

The Panthers (21-5) opened the season with a 5-2 win over theCobras in 10 innings, on Feb. 21 in Wesson.

The Panthers host the Brookhaven Regional at Moyer Field in theopening round of the South State 4A playoffs. Game 1 featuresLaurel (Region 7 No. 2) and Terry (Region 6 No. 4) at 4 p.m. OleBrook (Region 6-No. 1) meets George County (Region 7-No. 3) at 7p.m.

Wesson travels to Clarke County to participate in theEnterprise-Clarke Regional. The Cobras (Region 6-No. 2) take onTaylorsville (Region 7-No. 4) at 4 p.m., followed by hostEnterprise-Clarke (Region 7-No. 1) and St. Andrew’s (Region 6-No.3) at 7 p.m.

“Both teams played well,” said Ole Brook head coach Randy Springwho echoed Wesson coach Hugh Knight’s comments. “Wesson playedextremely well. They have a good ballclub.”

Knight’s squad doubled the score in the top of the eighth.Shortstop Mason Warren singled. Two batters later, Brandon Hoodwalked. Puckett’s single scored Warren. Gunter doubled to scoreHood and Puckett.

“They (Wesson) threw their best pitchers (Gunter and Langham)tonight and they did a good job,” added Spring.

Joseph Langham relieved Gunter and picked up the win, tossing 4innings and allowing3 runs (1 earned) on 5 hits. He walked 1 andstruck out 4 Panther batters.

Gunter aided his teammates with a pair of singles and a doubleat the plate. Catcher Tyler Broome had 3 singles and scored twice.Puckett scored twice.

Perkins suffered the complete game loss for Ole Brook, allowing6 runs (5 earned) on 11 hits. He walked 3, hit a batter and fanned5 Wesson hitters.

Brooks Hall and Adam Ogden each had a pair of singles.

In pregame ceremonies, Spring and his wife Amy, presented Ogden,Hall, Scotty Smith, Josh Patrick, Matt Walker, Xavier Qualls, CodyDunaway and W. T. King each with a long stem red rose and anautographed wooden baseball bat signed by their teammates. Seniorstatisticians Emily Oberschmidt and Ashley Hatcher also receivedlong stem red roses and an autographed baseball singed by thePanthers.
