Brook Academy netters finish strong in district

The Brookhaven Academy No. 1 and No. 2 boys singles and doubles,plus No. 1 girls singles and mixed doubles, captured first placeTuesday in the Academy District 4-AA Tennis Tournament at theBrookhaven Country Club.

Joining Brookhaven Academy in the tournament were teams fromPresbyterian Christian School, Columbia Academy, Silliman Instituteand Bowling Green.

The BA boys finished with 9 points followed by PresbyterianChristian with 3 1/2 points and Silliman with 1. The PresbyterianChristian girls led with 7 1/2 points followed by BA with 6.

“Our boys play was phenomenal,” said BA tennis coach VelmaEstess. “We beat people who had beaten us earlier in the year. Thegirls had a disappointing day. We lost to people we had beatenearlier in the year.”

Brookhaven Academy’s No. 2 girls singles and No. 1 and No. 2girls doubles team took second place.

All first and second place players advance to next week’s SouthState AA Tournament to be hosted by BA at the Country Club onTuesday, April 27. The matches begin at 9:30 a.m.

Winning first place for BA were Anna C. Moak in No. 1 girlssingles, Jerrod Rayborn in No. 1 boys singles, Alan Gray in No. 2boys singles, Collins Case and Chris Hooper in No. 1 boys doubles,Andy Byrd and Bruce Brady in No. 2 boys singles and the mixeddoubles team of Nicole Smith and Ben Rowley.

The second place finishers for BA include Sarah Taylor in No. 2girls singles, Katie Ryan and Hannah Estess in No. 1 girls doublesand Sydney Moak and Emily Ryan in No. 2 girls doubles.
