Lady Wolves wallop Jones

WESSON — The Co-Lin Lady Wolves fastpitch softball teamcollected 30 hits in sweeping the Jones CountyJunior College LadyBobcats Tuesday in a South Division doubleheader. Co-Lin won theopener 11-5 and the finale 8-4.

Co-Lin improved to 22-6 on the season. The wins clinched aState-Regional playoff berth for the Lady Wolves. Co-Lin leads GulfCoast by 1 game in the standings.

The Gulf Coast Lady Bulldogs come to Co-Lin Thursday for a bigdivision doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. If the Lady Wolves sweepthe Lady Bulldogs, Gulf Coast has to play Pearl River for a 1-gameplayoff. A split between Co-Lin and Gulf Coast would still give theLady Wolves the No. 1 seed.

“We really want the South Division title,” said Co-Lin headsoftball coach Allen Kent. “This would get us a bye in the firstround of the State/Regional Tournament.”

Co-Lin 11, Jones County 5

The winning pitcher in the first game was Katie Rouch (12-2).Rouch allowed 5 runs (4 unearned) on 11 hits, struck out 1 batterand walked 3.

“Katie wasn’t at her best today,” said Kent. “She hung in thereand shut them down after the third inning.”

In the first inning, Rouch belted a 2-out double to drive in 2runs. She scored on right fielder Angie Davis’ single to giveCo-Lin the 3-0 lead.

Jessica Melton led off the second inning with a triple andscored on a single by Ginny Dunaway to push the Lady Wolves lead to4-2.

In the third inning, Courtney Angel led off with a single andDavis singled Angel home to tie the game at 5-5.

Co-Lin exploded for 4 runs in the fourth to go ahead 9-5. BethSmith singled and Melton followed with a fielder’s choice. Dunawaydrew a walk followed by an RBI double by Rachel Breaux. Angelsingled to drive in Dunaway. Rouch hit a sacrifice fly to scoreBreaux. Angie Davis followed with her third hit of the game. Angelscored on Davis’ intentional rundown on a delayed steal off secondbase.

In the sixth, Dunaway and Breaux singled to score 2 runs in thesixth inning for the 11-5 lead. Dunaway scored when Rouch reachedbase on an error. Angie Davis doubled (her fourth hit) to drive inAngel.

Davis and Rouch each had 3 RBI for the Lady Wolves. Dunaway andAngel each scored 3 runs. Elsie Dixon singled.

Co-Lin 8, Jones County 4

The Lady Wolves went up on the Lady Bulldogs 1-0 in the firstinning. With 2 outs, Breaux ripped a single and took third base onAngel’s double. Angie Davis singled in Breaux.

Dunaway doubled to lead off the third inning, took third base ona fly ball by Breaux

and scored the second run of the game on a sacrifice fly byAngel to give Co-Lin a 2-0 lead.

In the fourth, Rouch reached base on an error. Dixon singled andMandy Vinson was walked with 1 out. Melton reached base on an errorto load the bases. Breaux tripled down the leftfield line to drivein 3 runs.

Davis led off the fifth with a double and scored on a single byDixon. Beth Smith followed with a single and Melton drove in Dixonwith 2 outs.

Earning the win was Ashley Davis (10-4) who hurled a 4-hitterallowing 3 walks, striking out 4 and yielding 3 earned runs.

“We really swing the bats well all day,” said Kent. “We poundedout 16 hits in game one and 14 in game two.”

On the day, Davis went 7-for-8 with 3 doubles and 4 RBI. Breauxwent 5-for-8 with a triple, a double, 4 RBI and 3 runs scored.

“Everyone contributed today,” added Kent. “We need to keepswinging the bats and play a little better defensively. We’ve gotto be at the top of our game Thursday. Gulf Coast is always achallenge.”
