Brookhaven Nationals eliminate Americans

NATCHEZ — The Brookhaven National League All-Stars reboundedfrom an opening round loss to McComb to whip the BrookhavenAmericans 10-2 Saturday in an elimination game at Duncan Park.

Tonight, the Nationals play Natchez at 6 in the third round ofthe Dixie Youth Baseball 11s District 6 tournament. Wesson playsMcComb at 8 in a battle of unbeaten teams. Wesson edged Natchez 9-8Saturday.

First baseman Grant Burke went 2-for-2 with a single and adouble for the Brookhaven Nationals in the loss to McComb. SamuelBallard chipped in a double. Travis Keene and Dustin Treadwaysingled.

Dillon Newell was the losing pitcher. He struck out 6 battersand walked 3 in 5 innings. Bubba Keene hurled the final frame.

Kendrick Hodges was the winning pitcher. He fanned 12 battersand walked 3.

McComb took a 1-0 lead in the first and added 3 runs in thesecond to lead 4-0. Brookhaven suffered 3 errors in the first 2innings but settled down and played solid defense the rest of thegame.

Nationals 10, Americans 2

In Saturday’s game, Leftfielder Dewey Stailey doubled andsingled for the Nationals. Joel Patrick and Allen Michael Allredsingled. Gabe Wilson, Treadway and Bubba Keene doubled.

Picking up the win was Danny Ford with 6 strikeouts to hiscredit. Ford also walked 6 batters and allowed 2 hits, a single anda double by Aaron Durr.

Cody White absorbed the loss. He struck out 8 batters and walked3.

“We are sound on defense,” said Brookhaven National coach MarcNewell. “Our bats came to life late. Our middle of the battingorder came through and got some hits.”

The Americans scored twice in the first inning to lead 2-0. TheNationals scored 1 run in the second and 2 in the fourth to takethe lead.
