Lawrence dumps Meridian

LAUREL — Lawrence County remained alive in the Dixie Pre-MajorsState Tournament with an 11-2 win over Meridian here Monday atLonnie J. Hosey Field.
Lawrence County led 5-0 after two, 6-0 after three, 7-1 afterfour and 11-2 after five.
Trent Hartzog doubled and singled for the winners, whileJonathan Stevens, Toby Smith and McKenzie Woods each singled twice.Marty Ballard added a double, with Justin Hewitt and Nick Jacksoneach getting singles.
Joseph Evans went the first three innings and got the win. Woodsfinished up in a relief.
Bo Stanley tripled and singled for Meridian. Anthony Taylordoubled and Walton Mitts and Rann West each singled.
Taylor was the starter and took the loss. Mitts came on in thesixth.
In Monday’s other games, Laurel-Jones County downed Kosciusko10-8 and Desoto County beat Lumberton 5-3.
In Tuesday’s action, Lawrence County faces Lumberton in anelimination game at 5:30 p.m., while unbeatens SouthwestMississippi and Desoto County tangle at 8 p.m. Laurel-Jones Countyhas a bye and will meet the Desoto County/Southwest Mississippiwinner Wednesday at 8 p.m.
The tournament concludes Thursday. The winner of the tournamentwill go to the World Series in Guntersville, Ala., starting July31.
