Sessums passes BA to win

Brookhaven Academy head coach Ray Ishee knew Price Sessums wasan athlete. He didn’t know how Sessums would handle the pressure ofbeing a starting varsity quarterback in his sophomore season.
Sessums followed his stellar performance in the Cougars’ season-opening win at Copiah Academy with another impressive performancein Friday night’s home opener. Led by a confident Sessums, the BACougars rolled over the Prentiss Christian Saints 47-8 at CougarField. Sessums completed 10-of-12 passes for 284 yards and fourtouchdowns.
“We knew Prentiss had young kids and we knew we would be able topass on them.” said BA head coach Ray Ishee. “We wanted to try andjump on them early and we did.”
It took only 18 seconds for the Cougars to strike. On the firstplay from scrimmage, Sessums connected with older brother StewartSessums for a 34-yard pass to open the Cougar scoring. Cole Hodgesadded the extra point as the Cougars led 7-0 with 11:42 remainingin the first quarter.
The Cougars added their second score of the night with 1:14remaining in the first when Cole Hodges dove across the goal linefrom 2 yards out. After a high snap on the extra point attempt,Sessums found a wide open Steven Covington in the corner of the endzone for the two-point conversion as the Cougars pushed their leadto 15-0.
Hodges added his second rushing touchdown of the night with 8:30showing on the clock in the second quarter as he darted in from 8yards out. Sessums would add touchdown passes of 48 yards and 30yards to Cameron Achord and Paul Davis to push Brookhaven’s lead to34-0 at the half.
Sessums picked up right where he left off in the first half byhitting Cole Hodges down the sideline for a 83 yard sprint topaydirt The final score of the night came with 4:47 left in thegame as Chris Falvey scored from 2 yards out.
Prentiss Christian’s only score of the night came at the 2:21mark in the third quarter when Corey Parish scored on a 9-yard run.Justin Savell added the two-point conversion.
“It feels good to get the win,” said a cheerful Price Sessums.”It was more of a passing game tonight. Our coaches studied filmand called the right routes at the right time. It’s a big win, itfeels good to be 2-0.”
Hodges led the Cougar rushing attack with nine carries for 35yards. He also had a reception for 83 yards and a touchdown.Cameron Achord and Paul Davis added TD catches of 65 and 30 yardsrespectively.
Dusty Bratton led the Cougar defense with 12 tackles. AaronDouglas added nine stops and Sawyer Smith had 7. Achord and Hodgeseach had an interception.
Prentiss was led by Justin Savell who gained 48 yards on theground. Corey Parish added 38 yards.
Brookhaven Academy travels to Franklinton, La. Friday night tomeet Bowling Green in the District 4-AA opener for both schools.Game time is 7 p.m.
