Four qualify for city election

Four people who previously announced their intentions to seekthe Ward Four alderman post have officially qualified ascandidates, said Juanita Williams, Brookhaven Election Commissionmember.

Petitions for Boyce Bullock, Shirley Estes, Steve Melancon andJay Bishop were verified last week. To run, a candidate mustcollect petitions with the signatures of 50 registered voters fromWard Four.

A special election to fill the unexpired term of Don Estes, whodied earlier this month, is scheduled for Oct. 12.

“It’s going to be a good election is people get out and vote,”Williams said.

Wednesday is the deadline for candidates to qualify to run forthe office. Williams doubted if any other candidates would join thefield.

“It’s such a short notice, I think they would have gone ahead(and qualified),” she said.

If no candidate receives a majority of the Oct. 12 vote, arunoff will be held between the top two vote-getters. The specialelection winner will serve through June 2005.

Regular city elections for mayor, aldermen and other electedoffices are scheduled for next year.
