Co-Lin teams sweep Mississippi Delta

WESSON — In their final home game before the ChristmasHolidays, the Co-Lin Wolves and Lady Wolves made the most it bysweeping two games from the Mississippi Delta Trojans and LadyTrojans Thursday night at Grady Mullen Gymnasium.

Sophomore guard Dana King’s 14 points powered the Lady Wolves toa 66-42 win over the Lady Trojans. King netted four 3-pointers.

In men’s action, sophomore guard Ledell Eackles and freshmanguard Joe Holliday fired in 13 points each to direct the Wolves toa 72-52 victory over the Trojans.

The win improved the Co-Lin women and men’s records to 5-4 onthe season.

Co-Lin 66, Miss. Delta 42

This was a revenge win for the Co-Lin women who fell to Miss.Delta 69-62 back on Nov. 15.

At halftime, the Lady Wolves led the Lady Trojans 26-24. A3-point shot by freshman guard Ashley Murphy gave the Lady Wolves a10-point, 22-12, lead with 7:56 left until halftime.

With a 26-18 lead and 2:25 remaining, Miss. Delta’s freshmanforward Jameica Gross collected five points to cut the deficit totwo at the half.

“We played better,” said Co-Lin women’s head coach Gwyn Youngfollowing the win. “In the second half, we rebounded real well. Wechanged our matchup on our man-to-man. We made them (Miss. Delta)work.”

At the start of the second half, King pumped in back-to-back3-point goals to spark the Lady Wolves to a 33-24 lead with 17:15remaining. King’s final three-pointer at the 14:08 mark gave Co-Lina 10-point, 43-33, advantage.

The Lady Wolves allowed the Lady Trojans to get no closer thannine points as the hosts slowly pushed their lead as much as 24points at the finish.

“We beat a good team tonight,” added Young. “We played like weneed to play. We kept the turnovers down.”

Contributing to the Co-Lin win with 13 points was sophomoreguard Gloria Lewis. Travalyn Smith netted 12 points and led off thebackboards with 12 rebounds. Loretta Martin pulled down eightrebounds followed by Crystal Brown with five.

Miss. Delta, coached by Burnadette McDonald, was led by JasmineCain and Gross with 11 points apiece. Latisha Brown collected sevenrebounds for the 5-2 Lady Trojans.

Co-Lin 72, Miss. Delta 52

In their previous meeting, the Wolves knocked off the Trojans60-46.

With 1:21 left in the first half, Co-Lin was on top 32-18following a 3-point play from sophomore guard Ledell Eackles whenMiss. Delta went on a 6-2 run to cut the Wolves’ lead to 34-24 athalftime.

Miss. Delta cut the Co-Lin lead to nine points, 36-27, at the17:57 mark. sophomore forward Derrick Stewart got a offensiveputback and Holliday exploded with a slam dunk for a 40-27lead.

The Wolves went up 47-31 following a field goal by sophomoreguard Brandon Caston when Trojan head coach Derick Fears wasassessed a technical foul. Caston went the free-throw line andnetted all three freebies to push Co-Lin’s lead to 52-31 with 11:53remaining in the game.

“At times we played well defensively,” said Co-Lin men’s headcoach Dennis Sims. “We were controlling the tempo. As soon as wegot up 15 or 20 points, we turned around and played poorly. Attimes we were sloppy. We played well enough to have won by 40(points).”

Freshman forward Arvel Keys contributed to the Co-Lin win with12 points. Stewart finished with 10 points. Tops off the backboardswas Tremaine Enoch with 11 rebounds followed by Eackles with sixand Dexter Middleton and Stewart with five apiece.

The 2-5 Trojans got 15 points from sophomore forward RandyYoung. Patrick Wodard followed with nine points.

Co-Lin travels to Delgado on Saturday, Dec. 11, for the its lastgame before the holidays.
