Wesson Cobras put fangs in St. Aloysius

WESSON — Senior guard Collin King pumped in a game-high 20points and grabbed seven rebounds to power the Wesson Cobras to a78-39 win over the St. Aloysius Flashes Tuesday night.

In the girls game, freshman point guard Perry K. Furr fired in21 points, grabbed five rebounds and made four steals in leadingthe Lady Cobras to a 78-36 victory over the Lady Flashes. Furrscored three 3-pointers.

The Cobras (6-4) jumped on top of the winless Flashes 8-0 whenWesson starting senior guard Wade Williams sustained a broken wristat the 5:28 mark and had to leave the game. At the end of the firstquarter, Wesson held a commanding 19-7 lead.

“It’s tough when someone goes down,” said Wesson boys coach RonKessler after the game. “I hate it. Wade is one of our seniors.It’s tough to lose one of our leaders. Somebody is going to have tostep up.”

St. Al was never in the contest. Wesson led by 24 points, 40-16,at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Flashes had their best quarter,scoring 16 points but the Cobras edged with 19 to lead 57-32 goinginto the final frame.

Contributing to the Wesson win with 19 points, including three 3pointers, was Mason Warren. Adrien Merchant fired in 12 points andmade three steals. Collecting seven rebounds was Adrian Merchantfollowed by Blake Pickett with was Grabbing five rebounds.

“We played okay,” added Kessler. “We played better defensivelythan we did at Richland.”

St. Aloysius, coached by Drew McBrayer, was paced by Chase Smithwith 18 points. Netting 10 points was Chris Johnson.

Wesson 78, St. Aloysius 39

The Lady Cobras (4-6) came out running in the first quarter totake a 16-9 lead. Wesson picked up the tempo in the second quarterwith a 21-5 run on St. Al to take a 37-14 lead at halftime.

“We have worked on coming out more aggressive,” said Wessongirls coach Jemmye Ann Helms. “We played really hard. They lookedout for each other. They weren’t selfish.”

Coming off the bench to score 17 points was guard Alexis Crosby.Megan Allen and Natasha Brown collected six rebounds apiece. SamEllison pulled down five rebounds. Christy Watson added foursteals.

The 2-5 Lady Flashes got nine points apiece from ElizabethMazzaiti and Sarah Kent.

Wesson travels to Piney Woods next Tuesday fortheir first division test of the season.
