Ole Brook splits with Bassfield

The Brookhaven Panthers got a career-high 31 points from seniorcenter Bud Chatman and roared to a 65-52 Tuesday night comebackvictory over Bassfield’s Yellowjackets in Sinclair Gymnasium. Theywere trailing by points at halftime.

In the varsity girls game, Bassfield bounced the Lady Panthers59-49, led by LaTerica Booth’s 15 points, 6 steals, 5 rebounds and4 assists.

Brookhaven resumes Division 6-4A play Friday night, hosting theTerry Bulldogs. The girls game starts at 6 p.m., followed by theboys at 7:30.

The Panthers (7-10) dominated the Class 2AJackets as Chatman and Michael Thrasher grabbed rebounds andcontrolled the inside game. Thrasher finished with 15 points.

“We had some key plays on the defensive end and we played wellin spurts,” said Ole Brook boys coach Ronald Hines. “We areimproving. Hopefully, we are ready for district (division)play.”

Bassfield (4-10), coached by Charlie James, couldn’t match upwith Brookhaven. The Jackets sank 6 treys and were led by MichaelPound and Willie McLeod with 10 points each.

The Jackets had led Brookhaven 32-22 at halftime.

“Brookhaven wore us down,” said Coach James. “They executed andwe didn’t. They rebounded the ball and used their size.”

The Lady Panthers (5-12) struggled through a rash ofturnovers as Bassfield took a 28-27 halftime lead. The Lady Jacketsoutscored the hosts 16-8 in the third quarter.

“I’m disappointed in the loss but I’m proud that mygirls didn’t quit,” said Ole Brook girls coach Billy Holmes. “Weare young and improving consistently. We have to make the basketsto win.”

Leading Ole Brook was guard Ashley Leggett with 17points and 2 steals. Center Swayze Black followed with 18 pointsand 13 rebounds. Katie Macabee had 7 rebounds. Blanch Wilson had 7assists and 5 rebounds.

“This was our first time to play Brookhaven and I lookforward to playing them again next year,” said Bassfield girlscoach Sylvia Hill. “We played a good game, one of our bettergames.. Brookhaven has a good team.”

The Lady Jackets (11-3) got 7 rebounds from WillettaThompson. Booth had 6 steals and 5 assists. Jessica Thompson andShakena Reese both had 6 rebounds.
