Routine maintenance work began Monday at several railroadintersections in Brookhaven, said Larry Callender, foreman forCanadian National Railroad.
“We’re doing a little maintenance. We’re trying to upgradedowntown (crossings),” Callender said Monday morning as crewsworked at the Enterprise and Court street crossings.
New crossing surfaces were being installed at those two streets.Additional work is planned at the Cherokee and Chickasaw streetcrossings.
Callender said crews are expected to be working on the crossingsabout two weeks total.
“We’re going to be skipping, leap-frogging, around,” Callendersaid.
Callender said the Cherokee Street crossing will be a majorimprovement. There, he said, about 300 feet of new rail and a newcrossing surface will be installed.
The rail work is prompting some intersections to have to beclosed. Callender cited an agreement with the city to minimizeinconvenience for motorists.
“We’ll have no more than two closed at one time,” Callendersaid.
