One joins race for alderman

Only one person last week added his name to the list ofcandidates for this year’s municipal elections, according todocuments on file with the City Clerk’s Office.

Donald R. Thadison Friday became the second person in the racefor alderman of Ward Three. Thadison, a 52-year-old truck driverfor McLane Southern, is making his first attempt at electedoffice.

“We feel there’s a need to help the community and theneighborhood progress,” Thadison said.

Thadison said he would like to see the city’s sewer systemupgraded and see that other city facilities are maintained in agood manner.

“We’re looking forward to having a spirit-filled race and to seewhat we can do,” Thadison said.

Thadison will face incumbent Alderwoman Mary Wilson. She isseeking her first full term after winning a special election forthe office last year.

Candidates who have qualified previously include:

* Mayor – incumbent Bob Massengill

* City Clerk – incumbent Mike Jinks.

* Chief of Police – incumbent Pap Henderson.

* Alderman at large – incumbent Les Bumgarner.

* Ward One alderman – incumbent Dorsey Cameron and Elisa CorleyJr.

* Ward Two alderman – incumbent Terry Bates.

* Ward Three alderman – incumbent Mary Wilson.

* Ward Four alderman – incumbent Shirley Estes.

* Ward Five alderman – incumbent Tom Smith and BurnellRobinson.

* Ward Six alderman – incumbent John E. “Buddy” Allen and BillyG. Carson.

Estes and Massengill are running in the Republican primary. Allothers are seeking office as Democrats.

The qualifying deadline is Friday, March 4.

Party primaries are scheduled for Tuesday, May 3, with runoffson Tuesday, May 17, where needed. The general election is Tuesday,June 7.

Election winners are scheduled to take office in July.
