Lady Wolves humble Hinds

WESSON — Co-Lin sophomore forward Travalyn Smith pumped in 20points and pulled down 11 rebounds Monday night to lead the hostLady Wolves to a decisive 74-44 South Division win over the HindsLady Eagles. Several area high schools were on hand to watch bothCo-Lin games and added vocal support.

The victory improves the Lady Wolves division record to 4-1 andoverall worksheet to 11-5. Hinds, coached by Mary Hunter, fell to0-5 in the division and 3-13 overall.

“It’s a home game we needed to win,” said Co-Lin women’s headcoach Gwyn Young following the win. We need to win some on theroad.”

Hinds was able to tie Co-Lin only three times, at the start ofthe game. Sophomore guard LaShawnda Pryor tied the game at 6-all atthe 15:37 mark in the first half.

The Lady Wolves went on a 20-0 run, powered by sophomore forwardLoretta Martin and sophomore guard Dana King’s three point fieldgoals for a 26-6 lead with 9:26 remaining in the first half.

At halftime, Co-Lin led by 13 points, 33-20, over Hinds.

“I thought at one point, we were working the ball well in thefirst half,” added Young.

With a 35-22 lead at the 17:37 mark in the second half, Smithran off six straight points to push the Lady Wolves lead to 41-26,15 points, with 14:08 left to play.

Co-Lin pushed its advantage to 21 points, 47-26, on a pair offree throws from freshman guard Jennifer Carter with 10:50remaining in the contest.

With 5:19 left to play, freshman guard Ashley Murphy nailed apair of free throws followed by a field goal from freshman forwardLaquita Ard to give Co-Lin its first lead by 30 points, 64-33.

Contributing to the Lady Wolves win with eight points each wereMelton and Martin. Crystal Brown grabbed nine rebounds followed byKristian McCray with eight rebounds and four assist. Melton alsograbbed four rebounds and made four steals Gloria Lewis had fourrebounds, three steals and three assists.

Hinds got eight points from Pryor and Paulesha McBride. Theleading rebounder was Kimberly Brown.

The Co-Lin teams travel to Poplarville Thursday for a keydivision matchup with the Pearl River Wildcats. Women’s play beginsat 6 p.m. followed by the men.
