Two seeking school board post

The field is set and two candidates are vying for a spot on theBrookhaven School District Board of Trustees during a March 5election.

Following Monday’s qualifying deadline, Stan Patrick and DustinWalker have been certified as candidates, said Superintendent LeaBarrett. The winner will succeed current board chairman Dr.Prentiss Smith, who opted not to seek re-election after 10 years onthe board.

Patrick is a partner with the certified public accounting firmof Baker-Patrick-Miller-White. He said he had been encouraged bysome friends to seek the office.

“I want to be able to help the Brookhaven School District becomeeven better than it is,” Patrick said.

Patrick said the district had accomplished great things. Hestressed a team approach to district success.

“I want to be a part of the team to keep things moving forward,”Patrick said.

Patrick and his wife Susie have three children. Josh graduatedfrom Brookhaven High School in 2004 and is a freshman atMississippi State University while Jake is a sophomore at BHS andJoel is in the sixth grade at Lipsey Middle School.

Walker is a corporate account support manager for CellularSouth. He cited a desire to help continue positive trends in theschool district.

“I think the Brookhaven School District already has got manygreat things going on,” Walker said.

Walker and his wife Stacey have two children. Alice Anne will beentering the first grade next year and Gatson will be startingprekindergarten.

“I have a vested interest in seeing the district succeed,”Walker said about his desire to serve on the school board. “Iwanted to take a step to be part of that progress.”

The five-member school board is composed of three members whoare appointed by the board of aldermen and two who are elected byvoters who live outside the city limits but within the schooldistrict.

Either Patrick or Walker will serve a five-year termrepresenting the portion of the school district outside the citylimits. Only voters in that area will be able to participate in theMarch 5 election.

The election will be held from noon until 5 p.m. Saturday, March5, at the Brookhaven High School gymnasium.
