BHS intruder arrested, charged with loitering

A Brookhaven man was arrested Monday after loitering atBrookhaven High School, authorities said.

David Earl Jones Jr., 19, of 900 Williams St., was arrested atthe school Monday and charged with trespassing on school propertyand possession of open beer by the Brookhaven Police Department,Police Chief Pap Henderson said.

Lea Barrett, Brookhaven School District superintendent, said anintruder was reported to BHS Principal Susan Chapman around 3:50p.m. She, in turn, called for security, who then called thepolice.

Barrett said the intruder had attempted to follow a femalestudent into the restroom.

“A teacher was still on duty in that building, and sheimmediately responded,” said Barrett. “No confrontationoccurred.”

Henderson said the man had been at the school earlier in the dayand had asked a teacher about enrolling in school but the teacherfelt something wasn’t quite right. The teacher gave the man theinformation he was asking about and directed him to go to theschool’s office with the janitor.

Barrett said the police department responded immediately andtook action, saying that was “proof that our security works.”

Henderson said Jones was arrested in the BHS band hall.
