Southwest hangs 2 losses on Co-Lin

SUMMIT — Trent Malbrough provided the heroics and the SouthwestCommunity College Bears swept Co-Lin on a sun-kissed Saturdayafternoon in a South Division doubleheader. Malbrough pitched thevictory in the 6-5 opener and climaxed the day by scoring thewinning run in the 8-7 nightcap which went 10 innings.

“It was a tough day all the way around,” said Co-Lin coach KeithCase after watching his injury-weakened team commit 12 errors inthe twinbill. “We are battling to play the game. We have some guyshurt. We aren’t getting the production we need on offense ordefense.”

Co-Lin fell to 18-14 overall and 1-5 in the South Division.Southwest, coached by Butch Holmes and Pete Young, improved to14-15 and 3-2 in the South.

The Wolves play a South Division twinbill Tuesday at JonesCounty Junior College in Ellisville, starting at 4 p.m.

“Trent Malbrough is a warrior,” said Case. “He really competeson the mound. When it came down, he never folded. Then he jumpedinto the catching gear and caught 10 innings in the secondgame.”

Malbrough, a sophomore right-hander from Reserve, La., remainedunbeaten in 6 games. He scattered 11 hits, struck out 6 and walked1.

Southwest got the big hits and the Bears made key defensiveplays at the end. “Give Southwest credit,” said Case. “They didwhat they had to do to win.”

Southwest 6, Co-Lin 5

Derek Thompson started for Co-Lin and was replaced by JosephLangham in the bottom of the seventh. Thompson gave up 8 hits, 5runs (2 earned), walked 1 and fanned 4.

Langham allowed 2 hits and 1 run in the loss.

Co-Lin shortstop Patrick Williams hit a solo homer in the fifth.giving the Wolves a 5-0 lead. The Wolves gave up 3 unearned runs inthe bottom of the fifth, committing 2 errors.

In the seventh, the Bears put 2 straight runners on base due toCo-Lin fielding errors. Reg Ott’s 2-run single drove in the tyingand winning runs, scoring Cody White and Lindsay Lang.

Jody Britt tripled and singled for Co-Lin.

Southwest 8, Co-Lin 7

In the 10th inning, Malbrough hit a 1-out double. Pat Barnessingled and took second. Malbrough raced home with the winning runon a wild pitch by Langham.

Lane Moore pitched 1 inning of relief to claim the victory.Malbrough doubled twice and singled. Pat Barnes chipped in 3hits.

Josh Logan tripled twice for the Wolves. Britt had 2 hits .
