City enjoys May sales tax increase

Brookhaven’s May sales tax totals eclipsed those of the sameperiod last year and kept Homeseekers Paradise on pace for anothergood year of collections, according to recent state Tax Commissionstatistics.

At $345,114.92 last month, Brookhaven’s share of sales tax wasabout $8,000 ahead of its May 2004 total of $337,804.99. CliffBrumfield, Brookhaven-Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce executivevice-president, said the May collections represented more good newsfor the community.

“Our moderate growth is in line with current national trendsshowing increased consumer confidence in spending,” Brumfieldsaid.

The May 2005 total placed Brookhaven at number 23 in the state’stotal sales tax collectors. Brookhaven was among 18 of the Top 25to see increases in their monthly totals.

For the year to date, Brookhaven’s fiscal year 2005 total wasabout $16,000 ahead of its FY 04 pace, with $3,744,870.64 this yearand $3,729,610.85 last year.

“Hopefully, we’ll continue to see good totals as we enter thesecond half of the year,” Brumfield said.
