Tenn. man faces sexual assault charge

A Covington, Tenn., man is in jail today charged with kidnappingand sexual assault in connection with an incident last week inBrookhaven, said Police Chief Pap Henderson.

Kevin Trent Cranford, 34, was returned to Brookhaven Tuesdayfollowing his arrest Friday by the sheriff’s department inCovington, the chief said.

Cranford is believed to have taken an 18-year-old woman from aBrookway Village parking lot to a Magee Drive motel. The allegedassault occurred last Monday afternoon, investigators said.

Henderson praised good detective work and assistance fromseveral sources in helping authorities to make an arrest.

“It was a very good case,” said Henderson, citing great helpfrom the victim in describing the man. “She helped ustremendously.”

While not revealing details, Henderson said Best Westernofficials also were a great help in the case.

“They went above and beyond to help us out, and we appreciatethat,” Henderson said.

Henderson said Cranford is a driver for a national truckingcompany.

“He travels to Brookhaven and other areas in Mississippi,”Henderson said. “I guess a layover is why he was here.”

Henderson said Cranford was in the Lincoln County Jail and nobond had been set in his case. The suspect is expected to go beforethe muncipal court judge Tuesday, the chief said.
