Copiah Co. wins AAA crown

WESSON – The Copiah County All-Stars tackled the BrookhavenAmericans for the second time in three days; this time in thechampionship game of the Dixie Youth Baseball AAA District 6 NorthSubdistrict Tournament. Copiah County, holding a 6-4 lead, explodedfor 5 runs in the fifth to smash the Americans 11-4 at Hiram C.Memorial Field.
Copiah County advances to the DYB AAA District 6 finals againstMcComb. The best-of-3 series begins Saturday at 6 p.m. CopiahCounty had defeated the Americans 9-7 on Tuesday.

The Americans drew first blood in their half of the first,leading 1-0. Leadoff batter Matthew Evans doubled. Alex Smith’ssingle scored Evans.
Copiah Co. responded by taking the lead for good at 3-1 in thebottom of the inning. With 1 out, Jacob Ashley reached on athrowing error. Bryce Berry walked. Two batters later, Doug Straitsingled to score Ashley. Austin Rodgers singled, scoring both Berryand Strait.
Copiah Co., coached by Jeff Smith, Jay Strait and Robbie Boone,plated 3 more runs in the third to garner a 6-1 advantage. EvanDubois singled. Two batters later, Ashley doubled. Berry’s singlescored Dubois. Two batters later, Strait singled to score Ashleyand Berry.
The Americans, under the tutelage of John Foster, Ricky Smithand Jerry Evans, answered with 3 runs in the fifth; trimming theirdeficit to 2 runs, 6-4. Logan Smith singled. With 1 out, Jacob Leasingled. Noah Allen’s single scored Logan Smith. Will Lee reachedon a fielder’s choice, that allowed Lea across home plate. Allenscored, as Lee was tagged out going to second.
With 1 out in the bottom of the fifth, Copiah Co. plated 5 runs.Logan Simon, Dubois, Campbell, Ashley and Berry scored. GarrettChapin’s bases-loaded walk scored Berry for the final margin.
Ashley authored the win for Copiah in 3 innings, while Campbelltossed the final 3. Leading the offensive charge was Strait with 3singles and 4 RBIs. Ashley and Berry each scored 3 runs. Duboissingled, tripled and scored twice.
Evans led the Americans with a single and a double. Luke Peaveysingled twice.
Braxton Foster suffered the loss, with Evans and Logan Smithcoming on in relief appearances.
